IT'S PARADE NIGHT AGAIN!
5. THE ADVANCEMENT OF CHRIST'S KINGDOM
Teaching the Christian Faith
Years ago we expected our boys to attend either Sunday school or the Company Bible Class. The weeknight meeting consisted of various activities in a Christian environment with specific slots for devotions or opening/closing service. Now only a few companies find that their boys are available on Sundays. For the remaining companies their boys are involved in numerous other activities - sport, music, dance, shopping, family outings or, in the case of separated parents, a visit to their other parent. Consequently our boys miss out on the Christian input experienced by those of previous generations. In addition in many of our schools the teaching of the Christian Faith now has a lower profile.
How do we react to this position? I would argue that, if we are to be true to our Object, then we need to provide a significant Christian input in our weeknight meeting. Yes, it may mean a little less time for the other activities, but we claim to be a Christian organisation and can we really expect God to bless us if we do not honour him (1 Samuel 2:30)?
Ask yourself this question:
"How many of my boys have become Christians or Church Members in the last few years?"
If you feel that there should be a more significant Christian input in your programme then you may like to consider the following thoughts:
1. Have a specific slot in the evening for your Christian teaching.
2. Be creative in finding a name for this time. Opening Service" or "Devotions" may not capture the imagination of your boys.
3. Consider whether the boys should sit down for this time, either on the floor for younger boys or on chairs for older lads.
4. Remember to discuss your plans with your Church.
5. With younger boys a Bible story may be appropriate using, say, a Children's Bible. For older children and teenagers you may want to consider the wealth of material on the market. Whatever you decide upon ensure there is progress from week to week.
6. Consider having a prayer linked to the teaching. See leaflet 1 in this series.
7. Consider whether the needs of the boys can be met adequately if two sections meet together for this teaching time.
8. With Company Section lads, especially, remember to include each year some teaching on what makes a person a Christian. There are a number of suitable booklets on the market (i) consult your church or a Christian Bookshop.
9. Be well prepared. This work has eternal consequences.
