INSIDE INFORMATION
15. WORKING WITH BOYS WHO HAVE DIFFICULTY
WITH READING AND WRITING

Some companies report that they have one or more boys who have difficulty with reading and writing. They particularly have problems testing these lads when they have completed an Achievement or Company Section Badge Class.

The following points may be of use to you.

1. Read pages 11 and 12 in "Go for Gold" the Junior Section Achievement Scheme.

2. In many cases it may not be necessary to ask the boy to read a question paper or to write his answers down. Pictures, quizzes or competitions can often be used instead. So for example use ROSPA posters to test home and road safety, or invite the boy to use a flannel graph, if you have one, to retell a Bible story.

3. Enlist the help of a parent or church member who can come in on occasions and ask the questions orally to individual boy(s).

Alternatively use this person to supervise an activity, e.g. simple craftwork, while you ask the questions. This has the advantage that the boy(s) being tested do not have to relate to someone new.
